BDSM Pony Play: Part II, Bondage

There is natural potential for BDSM in the life of a domesticated biological equine. The life of the domesticated biological equine is a life of bondage. Think about it for a minute, from birth the domesticated biological equine lives within a container. It might be a very larger container, such as a pasture or field, but there is a fence some where on the edge. Often, equines spend time in stalls. Then follows the halter and handling training. The trainer role enters the life of the foal quite early. The earlier the better. Time after time the trainer works with the equine with restraints: round pen, lead rope, bridle, reins, harness.

So much of the equine gear is about restraint and communication. The equipment controls the equine and lets him or her know what is expected.

• Halter - direction, attention, secure to a location
• Lead rope (various tie downs) - guide and tie down
• Cross ties - communicate the expectation of standing in one area
• Hitching post - secure tie down
• Bridle - control of the head through pressure on the skull that communicates cues
• Bit - control of the head through pressure on or around the mouth used in conjunction with a bridle
• Chin strap, throat latch, et al. - adds additional power to the bridle
• Reins - tool for the trainer/handler to guide the pony
• Driving reins - allow the trainer/handler to guide the pony from a considerable distance either on the ground or at cart
• Lounge line - one, long rein for exercising the pony on a circle or vault
• Surcingle - training apparatus encircling the girth for training to bit, head carriage, saddle, and driving
• Saddle - bondage device providing a place for the rider to sit comfortably on the equine for the purpose of interconnected relationship expression
• Martingale - control head carriage
• Chain (particularly with a lead rope) - added power to gain attention and control
• Twitch - device used to inflict pain or distract the pony in order to allow handler access to perform procedures the equine otherwise wishes to avoid
• Hobbles - harnesses the equine's legs to restrict movement (i.e. allows for grazing, but not running away)
• Leg wraps - protection, first aid, maintenance of musculature, movement restriction
• Blanket/rugs/show covers - protection from the environment (not exactly bondage, but adaptable as such with human ponies)
• Wash rack - keeps equine is place while protecting the groom
• Veterinarian chute - restricts the equine's movement up to complete immobilization for medical procedures

All of the above equipment provides examples of how a particular mode of control is used upon the equine. In reality a plethora of equipment exists for a variety of reasons. The type of equipment matters not so much as the intent of the person using the equipment. Obviously anything is pervertable. However, it is also possible for anything to be used with ignorance or awareness, lack of skill or grace, hazardously or appropriately.

Many adaptations surfaced within the BDSM pony lore naturally, such as slave bonds and harness, bridles, saddles, tie downs, confinement stalls, nipple rings used as martingales, and hobbles. The list also includes other, less thought of adaptations such at the twitch on the genitals or a crupper to hold a butt plug in place. Mummification can be used to turn the pony into a carousel pony strapped to a post or immobilized in suspension. The bondage gear itself defines the fetish pony who is going for this look. The biological horse world offers various methods of restraint for the breeding couple, helping the trainer to keep the mare from kicking the crap out of the stallion and to keep the stallion from getting too rough during intercourse. Medical bondage ponies enjoy the restraint of the veterinarian chute and compression bandages. Perhaps other restraints could be applied to prepare for a procedure. The idea remains that bondage is the most basic element to BDSM pony play and largely supplies the foundation for play scenarios.
